A grand day out. Sourton, Bridestowe, Lydford, Brentor, Mary Tavy and Tavistock - and a pub lunch. Thank you to Peter for organising. Our tower captain, Mike Wigney, has been wanting to ring way up Brentor for a long time, but the church is way up a steep hill with a rough path. And he finally did it today!

Ringing in Rounds

  For the Coronation in May we are hoping to ring rounds and call changes.  What do you need to be able to do in order to achieve this?  Firstly ring both strokes together consistently. Most of you are at or about to be at this point.  Next you need to be able to change the speed of your bell - just a LITTLE.  LISTEN to your bell. Hear the gaps between bells - they should be even.  If you need to ring more quickly. You need to ring below the balance so that the bell moves through a smaller arc: Slow or check the sally or backstroke so the bell does not rise as high. You may need to: check the sally and don’t let it rise so high at handstroke - this means catching the sally a little higher up, hands nearer the top of the fluffy bit take some rope in [shorten the tail-end] at backstroke - so you have more rope beneath your hand, less rope between you and the bell put more weight on the stroke to keep the bell up after you have checked the stroke - so apply more tension, pull harder and l

To all our Learners - Keep Going!

 To all our learner ringers Now that you have been ringing for a few weeks, we get the impression that some of you might feel a bit frustrated that you are not ringing yet at ‘expert’ level. This is normal, so please do not be deterred.  It will all come together. Probably quite soon, but if it takes a bit longer, then so what? There are no tests or exams. You are not a better person, or more or less of a friend, if you learn faster or slower. No-one is judging you.  You WILL ring on Coronation day! And someone will stand with you if needed.  The following are some responses to the learning frustrations, which we found on the internet. We have changed a few words here and there to make the comments specific to ringing.  There are lesson days where I can be really on top of things regardless of how long I have practised, and I have days that are positively embarrassing despite very diligent practice.  Some responses:  Well, the most obvious advice is to just keep at it!  it’s my strong

Fun at Bovey Practice this week

  Monday practice at Bovey was fun. We had learners ringing in rounds, a decent raise and lower on eight and practice of “whole pull and stand”. No practice next week as it’s our Easter ringing tour. If you want to come but haven’t yet said then please contact Peter Richards asap.
